**Description** Inspect, repair, maintain, service, and operate railcars and other duties as assigned. **Required Certifications:** For this position, you are required to become a Union Pacific certified driver during your probationary period. To become certified, you must meet the following **Motor Vehicle and Medical Requirements:** 1. Be a minimum of 21 years of age 2. Have valid driver´s license 3. Have an acceptable driving record per your Motor Vehicle Record - this includes commercial and personal vehicles: * No more than 1 moving violation conviction in the past 3 years; * No DUI, DWI, OWI, or refusal convictions in the past 3 years; and * No more than 1 DOT reportable accident in past 3 years. 4. You may also be required to obtain your Commercial Driver´s License (CDL) if operating a vehicle(s) with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs or greater. If this is required, you will need to obtain your CDL during your probationary period. **Medical Requirements:** Must meet the medical requirements/physical qualifications for commercial motor vehicle drivers as specified by the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Union Pacific Health and Medical Services will make the final determination on whether or not an individual meets the FMCSA medical qualifications, and may add additional medical requirements to assure the person can safety perform job tasks, with or without accommodation. Mechanic in Charge is located in South St. Paul, MN (Northern Region). Employees applying for this position may have any union affiliation. Salary is $31.25 per hour based on MIC agreement. Hours Tuesday ? Friday 0630-1530, Saturday 0630-1430 with Sunday/Monday rest days. Responsible for the daily inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of diesel locomotive mechanical, electrical and pneumatic systems and service track operations. Other responsibilities include regular Mechanic-in-Charge duties and others duties as assigned. Must be familiar with and qualified on mechanical inspections, electrical inspections, and maintenance of all related mechanical and electrical components and associated parts and circuits of Diesel Engines, Freight Cars, Air Compressors, Air, ATC and CCS equipment, etc. Must be familiar with all FRA, AAR and UPRR rules and regulations governing Locomotives and Freight Cars as well as other incidental work thereto and in connection there with. Possess a commercial driver´s license and DOT/CDL certified physical exam. **Accountabilities** * Knowledge in freight car construction and repair * Re-railing and wrecking operations along with experience testing, inspecting, and repairing air brakes. * Work is accomplished through the use of hand tools, power tools, gauges, cutting torches and welding operations. * Familiar with and qualified in mechanical inspections and maintenance of all related mechanical and components, billing procedures, FRA, AAR, open top loading and UPRR rules and regulations **Qualifications** **Required** * Must have a valid driver´s license. * Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle conflict situations. * Ability to speak English in a clear, concise manner in order to communicate with coworker(s) and supervisor(s). * Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship. * Journeyman´s card or provide documentation to verify 4 year(s) experience as a freight car repairman or mechanic. * Must be 21 years of age or older * In the past 3 years, must meet all the following FMCSA qualifications: * No more than 1 FMCSA motor vehicle accident; * No more than 1 moving violation conviction on your driving record; and * No DUI, DWI, OWI, or refusal convictions. **Preferred** * Experience operating tools required to repair freight cars. * Experience working around large equipment such as railcars, locomotives and cranes * Oxy-fuel and welding experience * Valid Commercial Driver´s License (CDL) * Basic computer skills **Department** Transportation employees are responsible for serving our customers by providing the safe, on-time and on-plan movement of freight trains.
